Kvarner Bay vs open sea fishing - what's the difference?

Friends fishing with Levante Tours

At first glance, the Adriatic might look the same everywhere, but once you spend some time fishing here, you quickly realize how different Kvarner Bay and the open sea actually are.

Kvarner Bay

Kvarner Bay is part of the northern Adriatic and is naturally protected by the surrounding islands and coastline. Because of that, the conditions are usually calmer, with smaller waves, lighter currents, and more stable weather overall. This makes the bay perfect for exploring multiple fishing spots, working rocky structure, and targeting species such as sea bass (brancin), dentex (zubatac), gilthead bream (orada), bluefish (strelka), and conger eel (grunj).

Fishing inside the bay is often more technical and precise. Reading the bottom, choosing the right bait, and adapting to changing fish activity plays a huge role in getting good results.

The open Adriatic

The open Adriatic is a completely different story. Once you move further offshore and leave the protection of the islands behind, the sea becomes deeper, rougher, and far less predictable. Waves are bigger, currents are stronger, and weather conditions can change very quickly, especially during strong northern winds.

Open sea fishing usually means covering larger areas, spending more time searching for active fish, and being prepared for more demanding conditions. It’s more dynamic, more physical, and often attracts anglers looking for a bigger challenge.

At Levante Tours, both environments offer unique opportunities depending on the season, weather, and fishing goals of the day. Some days the bay offers incredible action close to shore, while other days the best opportunities are waiting further offshore. Knowing when and where to fish is what makes the difference and that’s where local experience matters most.
